For a Kinder World

Dr. Nick Panagiotacopulos

CEO Volunteer of "For a Kinder World" Nonprofit Corp.

I was born in GREECE and now live in USA.

I was educated at the:

  • University of Athens, GREECE.
  • Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI) and at the Free University of Brussels (ULB), BELGIUM.
  • California Institute of Technology (CALTECH), USA.

I earned degrees in Mathematics (B.Sc.), Fluid Dynamics (Graduate Diploma), Aeronautics (M.Sc.), and Applied Sciences and Engineering (Ph.D.)

I worked at:

  • the National Defense Research Center of Greece as member of a team of three engineers who designed, constructed, and calibrated the first subsonic wind tunnel of Greece, and at the same time designed a windmill prototype for the utilization of wind energy in the Greek Islands (this project was initiated and encouraged by the late world renown aeronautical engineer Professor Theodore Von Karman of CALTECH).
  • BURROUGHS Corporation, in the field of Design Automation (use computers to design computers).
  • CALTECH’s / NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), in the field of Orbit Determination and Spacecraft Navigation.
  • CALTECH, in the field of Biomechanics.
  • California State University at Long Beach (CSULB), as Professor of Electrical / Biomedical Engineering.

I was a member of an international group that studied spine problems caused by whole body vibration. The task of this group was to establish standards for the safety of industrial related spine problems caused by repeated (periodic) loading. In addition, I was a member of a NASA study group and participated in the design of a dual energy tomography apparatus used to measure the loss of calcium from the spines of astronauts who were exposed to zero gravity for extended time periods.

I received two NASA (group) awards as a member of JPL’s Orbit Determination / Spacecraft Navigation team, one individual NASA award for the development of software used to automate certain aspects of Orbit Determination / Spacecraft Navigation activities, and an award for outstanding research in bio-engineering studies of the human spine from the Keim Spinal Research Foundation. During the period of my scientific and engineering career I published several research papers in almost every field that I was involved.
While I was at CSULB, in collaboration with Professor Ellis Cumberbatch (from the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Claremont Graduate University ) I created a special Ph. D. program requiring extensive training in applied mathematics and various fields of engineering. The purpose of the program was to deal with the exploration of new ideas (engineering problems) that industry was interested in. It was the first in its kind, and became a model followed by other universities.

Now, I am a Professor Emeritus, but continue my research in the field of bio-engineering. More specifically, I developed a software package that can be used as a diagnostic tool for  several medical problems (i.e. cancer, muscular, and neurological). The software is based on a powerful mathematical tool, known as Wavelet Transform (WT),and it is suitable for the study of non-stationary signals. Currently, I am using this software for the analysis of Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopic (MRS) signals obtained from cancer patients. The result is a high resolution biochemical profile of a tumor which could be used not only as a diagnostic tool but also as a way to evaluate the performance of existing cancer treatment  methods. The same software could be also used to evaluate the performance of muscles under certain external loading conditions., and the study of neurological problems

Since 2017, I am working on the development of an internet based worldwide survey (anonymous questions/answers) about the factors (i.e. diet, life style, environmental, heredity, and others) which may affect the occurrence of a disease. From this survey, a data bank containing the answers to these questions is created and subsequently analyzed using software developed with the invaluable collaboration of my nephew Demetrios from Greece. The final outcome of this work is a graph showing the probable DISEASE-FACTOR connection (trend) for several categories of individuals. This information is invaluable for everybody and especially for those who are doing epidemiological research. It includes data obtained worldwide, it is available via INTERNET for everybody, it is free of charge and in real time. The name of the system is: A MACROSCOPIC VIEW OF A DISEASE (NDP DISEASE – FACTOR CONNECTION SYSTEM).

In addition, I am very interested and involved in studying the development of human character as a function of the immediate environment, excluding heredity

As you can observe, my research was and still is focused on medical and humanity related  problems, intending to help those they are suffering from them.

For the last 28 years, I became interested in the welfare of animals, environment, and humanity. Since that time, I consistently practiced vegetarianism, and from 2014, I became vegan. I am against violence, cruelty, and suffering, caused by those who have the power and the opportunity to exercise them on powerless children, physically handicapped, and animals.

I believe and try to practice two things that make sense:

LOVE – “love your neighbor as you love yourself”, and

PEACE – “peace be with all of you”.

My own interpretation about who is considered to be my neighbor is: everybody (friend or enemy), animals, plants, and everything created by the Super Power (God or Nature). For the last 28 years, I live a simple and non-materialistic life, dreaming and working for the making of a kinder world.

Dedication

As a founder of FKW,  I wish to express my gratitude to those who motivated me to create FKW, and dedicate this work to them. They are: My mother Eugenia, and my father Demetrios who through their examples of altruism implanted in me humanitarian ideas. My sister Angeliki who died when she was 9 years old because of incorrect diagnosis and treatment of a trivial disease, and who made me aware that medical mistakes lead to many deaths. My brother Gerasimos, a gifted mind who introduced me to the world of scientific curiosity, and who died when he was 54 years old. To my wife Aliki, who without any concern about her own comfort and safety dedicated herself to the service of abused children and family.  Finally, I dedicate this work to my many beloved animals: My late dogs: Ralph, Christa, Caesar, Stad, Casey, and Areal, and my dog Valentino, and my cat Blackie, who are still with me. These animal friends taught me much about true friendship, unbounded love, and honesty that is difficult to express.

In my life, I experienced war atrocities, famine, health problems and witness the  suffering and death of some family members, and few dear friends from cancer and other incurable diseases.

All the above were very valuable life experiences that helped me think about these issues, to put things into perspective, and made me more sensitive to human and animal suffering.  The creation of the “For a Kinder World” (FKW) nonprofit Corporation, was the result of these experiences.
